Bird Island Basin is a small area in the Laguna Madre accessible via the Padre Island National Seashore. Bird is a famous national windsurfing destination for a few reasons. First of course is the wind, which is very good all year except occasionally late June through early August, and at its peak about April through May. The Laguna Madre is waist deep just about everywhere and often requires a weed fin. Long stretches of flat water are great for long reaches of slalom or speed sailing. Occasionally the chop is good enough for small jumps, which allows for good freestyle practice. ABK runs a freestyle clinic here in April and November. Worldwinds has an excellent rental fleet and offers lessons right at this location. People from all over the world have been known to hang out, sail, and camp here for weeks at a time. Although there is no wave sailing, Bird is just about as good as it gets.
